A shapefile is a vector data storage format. It stores the geometric location and attributes.

To create a shapefile in ArcMap 10.1, you should follow these steps :
1)You should first of all open the "Catalog Window" to access your data folders. Highlight the folder where you will put your shapefile. Right click on it. And choose "create a shapefile". But if you want to create a new folder, you can right click on an existing one, and choose "New" then "Folder". Rename your new folder and do the same previous step.

2)In the create a new shapefile dialog, that appears, choose a file name, the type of the file(Points, Polylines, Polygons) from the drop down menu, and choose a projection from the list. So set the Spatial Reference (Projection/Datum) by clicking the Edit button. This opens the Spatial
Reference Properties dialog box. You can choose a coordinate system wich is affected to anodher feature. In this case, you have to choose "Import" and navigate to know that your folder that contains data with the coordinate system already defined.

It is important to know that you should choose the same projection for all maps, in order to preserve accuracy. Click on "Ok" twice.
